How to pick your first BJJ gi
Your first gi doesn't need to be expensive — it needs to fit and survive the wash. Here's how to choose one without overthinking it.
Get the size right first
Fit matters more than brand for a beginner. Gi sizes run on the A-scale (A0–A5, with F-sizes for women), keyed mostly to height. Because every brand's chart is a little different, start with a recommended size and confirm it against that specific brand. The gi size finder gives you a starting A-size to check.
What actually matters
For a first gi, prioritise: a size that fits, durable stitching, and a fabric that won't shrink unpredictably (pre-shrunk or ripstop is forgiving). What doesn't matter yet: ultra-premium weaves, fancy patches, or "competition" branding. A simple, well-made gi in white, blue or black will serve you for years.
IBJJF-legal basics
If you might compete, a plain white, blue or black gi in good condition keeps you compliant. Avoid wild colours and excessive patches until you know your gym and competition norms. You don't need a comp gi to start — any solid training gi is fine.
One gi or two?
Start with one, add a second once you're training a few times a week — washing after every session is non-negotiable, and a second gi means you're never stuck with a wet one. New to laundering it? Our gi-washing guide covers it.
