How IBJJF weight classes work

At IBJJF events the weigh-in happens in your full gi, usually right before your first match. The number on the scale has to be at or under your division’s upper limit while you’re wearing the kimono, belt and all. That’s the single most common mistake new competitors make: they register at their walk-around bodyweight and forget the gi adds roughly 1.3–2.3 kg (3–5 lb) depending on weave and size.

There is no lower limit for a division — a lighter athlete may compete up a class, and athletes may also enter the open class regardless of weight. You simply cannot be over your registered division’s cap at weigh-in, or you’re disqualified before you step on the mat.

Read the table, then weigh in your gi

The limits below are the adult gi divisions. Find the first row your gi-on weight fits under — that’s your division. If you’re within a kilo of a cap, weigh yourself wearing the exact gi you’ll compete in, after a normal meal, and leave yourself margin. Scales at the venue are not always kind.

Frequently asked questions

Do I weigh in with my gi on?
Yes. At IBJJF events you weigh in wearing your full gi, including the belt, and your weight must be at or below your division’s upper limit. Plan for the gi adding roughly 1.3–2.3 kg (3–5 lb).
Are no-gi weight classes the same?
No. IBJJF no-gi divisions use different limits because there’s no kimono on the scale. This finder is gi-only on purpose — we don’t want to mix the two and give you a wrong cap. Check the no-gi limits for your specific event.
Can I compete in a heavier division than my weight?
Yes. You can always enter a division above your weight, and you can enter the open/absolute class. You just can’t be over the cap of the division you registered for.
What if I’m right on the limit?
Leave margin. Weigh yourself in the actual gi you’ll wear, ideally on a scale you trust, and aim to be a few hundred grams under. Venue scales and a post-warm-up body can both nudge you over.
