Sizing your mat space

Standard EVA puzzle mats come in 1 m × 1 m (about 40 in) interlocking tiles, so covering a space is a matter of counting square metres. This tool rounds up on each side so you get full edge-to-edge coverage rather than a strip of bare floor. For solo drilling you can work in a surprisingly small footprint; for live rolling with a partner, more space is safer.

Thickness and safety

Thickness matters as much as area. For takedowns and throws, aim for 40 mm (1.5 in) tiles to protect against impact; for ground drilling and lighter rolling, 20 mm is usually fine. Whatever you buy, lay it on a hard, level floor — puzzle mats over carpet shift and bunch. Tape or border edges if tiles tend to separate during scrambles.

Frequently asked questions

How many mats do I need for a home gym?
Count the square metres of your space — each 1 m tile covers one. This tool rounds up per side for full coverage. A small spare-room space is often 9–16 tiles.
How thick should BJJ mats be?
40 mm (1.5 in) if you'll do takedowns; 20 mm is enough for ground work and light rolling. Thicker mats absorb more impact.
Can I put mats over carpet?
It's better than nothing, but mats shift on soft surfaces. A hard, level floor underneath gives the safest, most stable surface.
