IBJJF Age Division Lookup

Enter your birth year to find your IBJJF age division. IBJJF uses the age you reach during the competition year — not your age on the day — which trips up a lot of first-time Masters competitors.

The competition-year rule

This is the part people get wrong. Your IBJJF age division is based on the age you turn during the calendar year of the competition, calculated as competition year minus birth year. If you turn 30 at any point in 2026, you are eligible for Master 1 at every 2026 event — even one held in January, before your actual birthday.

You may always compete down into the Adult division if you want tougher matches, but you cannot compete up into an older Master bracket than your age allows.

The brackets

Juvenile divisions are for 16- and 17-year-olds. Adult covers 18 to 29. From 30 up, Masters brackets step in five-year bands. The full set is below.

Frequently asked questions

Is my division based on my birthday or the year?
The year. IBJJF uses the age you reach during the competition year (competition year minus birth year), so you’re eligible for a bracket for the whole year you turn that age, regardless of whether your birthday has passed.
Can I compete in a younger or older division?
You can move down into Adult for stronger competition. You cannot move up into an older Master division than your age qualifies for.
When do I become a Master?
The year you turn 30. Master 1 is for athletes reaching age 30–35 in the competition year.
