BJJ Gi Size Finder

Get a sensible starting gi size from your height and weight, then adjust for build, brand and shrinkage. Gi sizing is A0–A5 and it is not standardised — treat this as a strong first guess.

Why gi sizing is a starting point, not a guarantee

BJJ gis use the A-size system (A0 through A5, plus F-sizes for women and youth sizes for kids), but every brand cuts a little differently and cotton shrinks. Two A2s from two companies can fit noticeably differently. The size here is a reliable anchor; your final pick depends on your build and how the specific brand runs.

If you’re between sizes, think about shrinkage: a 100% cotton gi will tighten in the wash, so sizing up slightly and shrinking to fit is a common approach. Pre-shrunk and ripstop gis move less, so trust the chart more.

Reading the brand charts

Always check the manufacturer’s own size chart against your height and weight before buying — it’s the single best predictor. Many brands publish a grid keyed to exactly those two numbers. Use our result to know which row to look at, then let their chart confirm it.

Frequently asked questions

What do A0, A1, A2 mean in BJJ gis?
They’re the adult gi size system, running roughly A0 (smallest) through A5 (largest), keyed mainly to height with weight as a secondary factor. Women’s gis often use F-sizes and kids’ gis use M/C numbering.
Should I size up for shrinkage?
If the gi is 100% cotton and not pre-shrunk, many grapplers size up slightly and shrink it to fit. For pre-shrunk or ripstop gis, follow the chart more literally — they move less.
Why do two A2 gis fit differently?
There’s no universal A-size standard. Each brand sets its own measurements, so always cross-check the specific brand’s size chart with your height and weight.
