How much does a BJJ gi weigh?
It sounds trivial until you're standing on a competition scale. A gi can swing your weigh-in by two kilos or more, so knowing what yours weighs is part of making weight.
Typical gi weights
A gi's weight depends mostly on its weave and size. As a rough guide for an adult gi: lightweight competition gis can come in around 1.2–1.5 kg, standard pearl-weave gis around 1.5–2 kg, and heavier double-weave or older-style gis 2–2.5 kg or more. Pants and belt add a bit on top. Larger sizes weigh more simply because there's more fabric.
Why it matters at weigh-ins
Because IBJJF gi weigh-ins are done with the kimono on, your gi's weight is effectively part of your competition weight. Two competitors at the same bodyweight can land in different positions against the limit purely based on which gi they wear. If you're near a cap, a lighter competition gi can be the difference between making weight and a DQ.
Find out what yours weighs
Don't guess — put your full competition gi (jacket, pants, belt) on a scale, or weigh yourself with and without it. Then plan your division around that real gi-on number using the weight class finder.
Shrinkage changes things too
A gi that's been hot-washed and tumble-dried will weigh and fit differently than it did new. If you're choosing a competition gi partly for weight, see how washing will affect it with the gi shrinkage calculator.
Plan your weigh-in
Weigh your gi, then check your gi-on division against the verified limits.
