IBJJF weight classes, explained simply

There are nine adult gi divisions in IBJJF competition, from Rooster up to Ultra Heavy. Here's what each one is, and the one rule that decides whether you make weight.

The adult gi divisions

The IBJJF uses nine weight classes per gender for adults (plus the open class). For adult men, the gi divisions top out at: Rooster 57.5 kg, Light Feather 64 kg, Feather 70 kg, Light 76 kg, Middle 82.3 kg, Medium Heavy 88.3 kg, Heavy 94.3 kg, Super Heavy 100.5 kg, and Ultra Heavy with no upper limit. Women's divisions follow the same structure scaled down, starting at Rooster 48.5 kg.

Those kilogram figures are the ones the federation treats as authoritative. The published pound equivalents are close but not always a clean conversion, so if you'll be weighed in pounds, plan around the pound number for your event.

The rule everyone forgets: you weigh in wearing the gi

This is the single most important thing about IBJJF gi competition. Weigh-ins are done with your full kimono on, so the division caps above are gi-on weights, not your bodyweight in shorts. A competition gi typically adds 1.5–2.5 kg depending on weave. Weigh yourself at home in your actual competition gi a week out — not on the morning of, and not in your underwear.

Confirm before you compete

IBJJF rules and division limits are updated periodically and individual events can have exceptions. Always check the current official rule book at ibjjf.com and your event's published rules.

Gi vs no-gi limits are different

No-gi divisions use lower caps because there's no kimono on the scale — usually a couple of kilos lighter than the gi equivalent. Never plan a gi event around no-gi numbers or vice versa; that mismatch is exactly how people end up in the wrong bracket. To find your correct adult gi division in seconds, run your gi-on weight through the IBJJF weight class finder.

Masters use the same weights

Masters divisions (age 30+) use the same weight limits as adults; only the match times and age brackets change. So once you know your division, it carries across whether you compete Adult or Masters.
